CAJONA DE MANILA MAKERS of Mismo Precision Percussions Pro-Master Series , SLAP n' TAP vis a v TAP n' SLAP, SLAPTAP BOX and , SLAPBOX PHILS. (A TRUE FILIPINO PRIDE ALL OVER THE WORLD) manufacturing the BEST PROVEN SOUND QUALITY CAJON WITH EFFORTLESS PLAYING COMFORT in the world today, since 2002 ... we adapted and conceptualized the use of the cajon in the newly emerging acoustic music scene way back in 2002 with the view and aim in mind to augment the sound of an acoustic band set-up and eventually because it garnered success, I have decided to manufacture the cajon outside of our own use due to a rising demand from our colleagues in the music industry to use the cajon in their own gigs ...

THE TRUTH ABOUT CAJONS/CAJON
The best sound quality made Cajon is not about shiny paint jobs or fancy branded woods (The kind of wood used in a cajon is only a 30% factor of a good sounding cajon) ...
" IT'S ABOUT WHO MAKES THEM, NOT WHAT THEY ARE MADE OF”
If you want a proof of this go to your nearest music store, ask the salesperson what kind of wood they use on the cajons they are selling (you will most likely get this response: “our cajons are made of Narra ! or Maple ! or Mahogany etc. and the Tapa (front striking panel) is made of spruce wood) (actually walang maple sa pilipinas, same as spruce) Soon as they finish with their answer ask the salesperson to play it or if they will allow you, try and play it yourself so you could verify for yourself if it takes a whole lotta bashing and banging your hands onto it just to be able to get a sound out of the cajon. (all cajons sold in music stores as i found out for myself are made by carpenters, and i don’t have to play them to know... i can tell just by looking at them if they are made by carpenters)
After testing cajons from store you can start hunting for cajons made by percussionists/musicians like me so you could compare the difference in two basic cathegories ...
namely :
-
THE SOUND QUALITY to include the loudness on mere 1 finger tap
-
AND THE COMFORT PLAYABILITY (if they are painful on your hands, if they are responsive on mere slight tap or in general if they are handfriendly
-
What is envolved in tuning a top of the line, high end sounding cajon made by percussionists ?
Two main tasks envolved in tuning a cajon (pretty much the same in tuning the drums as well) :
-
PRESSURE
-
TENSION
CHOOSE WISELY AND BUY SMARTLY - A FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Most of us when buying an instrument would prefer to spend just once on an instrument ... as in being able to nail it in terms of choosing the right brand for the first time, because at the end of the day, going into buying thru trial and error ends up as more expensive , HAVING TO BUY AGAIN AND AGAIN TO GET THE CAJON YOU THOUGHT YOU DESERVE IS JUST SENSELESS ... HAVING TO SPEND ONLY ONCE FOR AN INSTRUMENT IS DEFINITELY THE WAY TO GO AND IS SMART AND WISE SPENDING, don’t you agree ? Thats why it pays to see personally and compare the sound quality and painless playability from a cajon made by someone who understands inside/out the cajon instrument he is making against those cajons made by tricky carpenters (sold in music stores) whose focus is mainly just to showcase the aesthetic looks of the box. IT’s simple : don’t get caught feeling sorry and blaming yourself for the mistake you made buying the wrong and crappy cajon due to your failure to make an effort to compare and see personally the difference between cajons made by a musician versus box made by carpenters. –
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THE CAJON IS MADE BY A CARPENTER ?
-Talk to the maker themselves
- go visit where they make them
- ask questions regarding the sound like:
- why does it rattle everywhere or worst how come it doesn't rattle at all in the snare area where you strike it...
- why is the bass striking portion too low in the front area of the box? Can you not make it higher so that i won't have to bend forward too low as it gets to be painful in the back after a while...
- if they truly know what their doing they should be able to put the bass striking area higher on the top portion where you don't have to bend all the time...
- bass sound must at least have a 3 sound tones on the 1st striking layer... and another 3 bass tones on the 2nd striking layer (round low, flat low and low overtone)
- more important of all is that the snare striking portion should be almost feather touch using only 1 to 2 fingers to make it rattle.
HOW TO TEST A WORLD CLASS HIGH–END GOOD QUALITY SOUNDING CAJON THAT IS “ EFFORTLESS TO PLAY “ AND WILL NOT MAKE YOUR HANDS SUFFER IN PAIN:
- no microphones attached to an amp or mixer
- the sound volume of the cajon must be good & loud already even w/out the mic (ACOUSTIC – UNPLUGGED)
- THERE MUST BE A CLEAR DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE SNARE & BASS BY JUST MERELY SLIGHT/TENDER TAPPING ON THE SNARE AREA WITH 1 FINGER (not bashing and banging) and then 3 inches below the snare right away must be the bass ... The SNARE SOUND MUST BE SEPARATE FROM THE BASS SOUND WITH DISTINCT AND PROFOUND CLARITY (NOT MIXED SOUND TOGETHER)
- YOU MUST BE ABLE TO HEAR 16 BEAT RATTLES ON YOUR SNARE BY JUST A 2-FINGER ALTERNATE TAPS “MULTIPLE FINGER ROLL TAPS” (not bashing and banging with 4 fingers)
- a LOUD CRISP VERY SHARP RATTLE should be heard by a mere 1 finger tap on your snare
- ALSO, A TENDER 4 FINGER SLAP ON THE BASS SOUND MUST PRODUCE A HUGE ROUND SOLID BOOM WITH 6 VARIETY OF DIFFERENT TONES RANGING FROM LOW-MID-AND HI OVERTONES WHEN SLAPPING FROM ONE STRIKE AREA TO ANOTHER. WHEN SLAPPIN THE BASS, THE SOUND YOU HEAR MUST BE AT THE VERY LEAST 90% LOUDER THAN THE SNARE RATTLE (NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND ... WHEN YOU ARE SLAPPIN THE BASS THE BASS ROUND SOLID SOUND MUST BE LOUDER THAN THE RATTLE)
- A sound parameter by which MISMO Precision Percussions of Cajon de Manila is known for worldwide.
furthermore, your cajon must be tuneable from inside-out ... because it's a musical instrument which means it is tuneable ( examples of music instruments are drum sets, guitars etc.) If the cajon you bought from stores are not tuneable with fixed tune then you've been short changed because it falls on the cathegory of a musical accessories (examples of musical accessories of FIXED TUNE are Shakers, tambourines, cowbells etc.)
- If the test is successful, it simply means you have just tested THE AUTHENTIC PAINLESS CAJON WHICH USES BASS STRINGS TO POWER TUNE THE SNARE AREA (NOT SNARE WIRES/BANDS USED BY CAJONs MADE BY CARPENTERS WHICH IN REALITY SOUNDS MORE LIKE A SHAKER WITH A VERY FLAT PITCH)
if you have any questions regarding cajons in general, i would be more than happy to oblige and help you clarify things ...
NOTE:
- Readers of this page has no obligation to buy cajons from me as i am not the only musician who makes cajon.
- Furtheremore, this information is being shared and emphasized due to a lot of inquiries we receive on a daily average basis and to guide those who would like to get their money's worth on the cajon that they buy)
COMMON QUESTION I GET FROM EMAIL AND CALLERS WHO INQUIRE ABOUT MY CAJON:
HOW COME I DON'T SELL MY CAJON IN STORES? WHY DON'T I LIKE MY CAJON TO BE SOLD IN LOCAL MUSIC STORES?
WELL...
FIRST - It is not my intention that all would be buyers of cajon gets to own the cajons that I make. I'd like to be able to choose who i'll be making my cajons for, after all EACH CAJON I MAKE I TREAT IT LIKE AS IF I AM MAKING IT FOR MYSELF (blood, sweat minus the tears but a whole lotta PASSION) ... I would much prefer it that other users of cajon own a different a brand whether brands by carpenters or by other musicians. THAT WAY THERE IS A POINT OF COMPARISON from the cajons i make for myself and my valued chosen cajon de manila co-users family against those made by carpenters.
SECOND - If all of us are using the same cajon brands then there is nothing to compare it with anymore!
at the end of the day if you gather all the cajons made by different carpenters and played them side by side with the ones made by Percussionists, the cajons made by a percussionist best quality will undoubtedly stand out from all the rest !
If you don’t want to spend again and again trying out different carpenter’s beatbox branded by music stores ... because the cajon you bought was horrendous to your hands and ear ... make time and effort to experience demos of cajons made by musicians so you can make an intelligent comparison from cajons sold in stores.
WORRY ABOUT THE QUALITY FIRST AND THE PRICE LATER AFTER YOU HAVE MADE THE COMPARISON.
Simple logic goes: when you need a heart operation you go to a heart surgeon, not a car mechanic ... when you want a high quality cajon, GO FOR THE ONE'S PERSONALLY MADE BY MUSICIANS BECAUSE CHANCES ARE THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING ... find out too if the musician is really the one's making it or they are just having it made by a carpenter, there's a difference and you will be able to spot them if you are observing the demo with focus on sound quality and handfriendliness when tappin’ tha snare with 1 finger and slappin’ the bass ... you should be able to hear the separation of rattle sound between the snare and the bass sound quality ... ( di naman pwedeng walang rattle, di naman pwedeng puro rattle kahit saan ka pumalo ) ... there should be a clear delineation of sound between the snare rattle and the bass round solid sound, something the immitation cajon made by carpenters using SNARE WIRES could not not possibly attain. It’s a blessing IN THE SENSE THAT I AM ABLE TO SHARE TO OTHERS THE SATISFACTION I GET FROM PLAYING AN AUTHENTIC CAJON" (without experiencing a swollen hand after)
On the other hand, although it is my passion to make and play the cajon, I FIND IT MORE FULFILLING TO GET TO CHOOSE WHO I'M MAKING MY CAJONS FOR.
